Living a Satisfying Life

I am always amazed at people’s recreational choices. Some exercise, others prefer shopping, and many seek out adventures in exotic destinations. Personally, I like to watch people. It is better than going to the zoo and a whole lot cheaper. I watch people at stores or view their posts and comments on social media. No, I am not a creeper, but I find it interesting what many of us have in common—we aren’t satisfied with much of anything. We aren’t satisfied with our jobs, cars, houses, incomes, relationships, economy, political environment, or spiritual state. We never make enough money, own enough possessions, get enough recognition or have enough friendships. We always seem to be looking for these perfect situations and environments but can’t seem to find them.

When difficult or unpleasant situations present themselves, we often feel like everyone else’s life is great and ours is terrible. What would our lives be like if we remembered we don’t live in a perfect world and difficulties are a part of life? Corrie Ten Boom put it this way, “If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed. If you look within, you’ll be depressed. If you look at God, you’ll be at rest.” Wow, that sums it up pretty well. Where we look for satisfaction will determine if we find it or not. I Timothy 6:6-8 says, “Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.”

Contentment is found in rejoicing over Who God is and what He has provided and not in grieving over what we don’t have. If we keep it simple and follow God’s good plan, a satisfying life is not far away.
